Video Interview - Why? - Darrin Grella's - The Interview Gurus

With the way the entire interviewing and recruiting life cycle is changing, I am witnessing more and more situations when employers are performing video interviews.  Either live and streaming video conferences (Via Kinkos, Skype or some other video streaming source) or asking the qualified candidates to submit a video as their initial screening.

So why do employers ask for video resumes?

1.  Time saver.  See 10 to 15 people in 30 minutes opposed to one person in a face to face interview.

2.  80% of the hiring decision is attitude and appearance.  This is easy stage to screen for that.

3.  Humans communicate by 70% non-verbal skills and 30% verbal.  Despite what you say on the video, you are, in a quick fashion, being evaluated with your body language.

4.  Cultural Fit screening.  A hiring authority pretty much knows in the first 30 seconds if they want to hire you.  Or at least want to talk with you more.

4.  Employers (hiring authorities) are overwhelmed by the influx of available talent.  This helps them with the screening process.  For every one position that is posted, they receive upwards to 40 people applying.  If you have 5 positions open across the organization, that is obviously 200 people.  Throw 200 more contacts at you and try to get your day job done.

Many people feel that this is a form of discrimination or judgment.  Well, it is.  That is exactly what an interview is all about, “Is this person going to be a fit for my organization.”  Sorry that you may feel like that, this is in no way considered illegal.  You can do one of two things, challenge it or accept it and master a new skill of being an actor.  I may not agree with this in its entirety however we have to learn to adapt with the mainstream if we want to be in mainstream.

Much continued success,
